Spanish and Persian scripts dominate the incoming paperwork
Spanish is the largest source language in the Richmond area, arriving mostly with families from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico. Central American civil records have a feature that surprises people the first time: the wet stamps and the seal text are not decoration. A certified copy of a birth entry carries the name of the issuing municipal registry, the book and folio reference, the official's title and a legalisation stamp, and every one of those is content an American reviewer may check. A translation that renders the body of the record and skips the stamps has dropped the part that proves where the record came from. Guatemalan documents add a national identity number and a machine-readable block, and those characters must be reproduced exactly rather than approximated.
Virginia received a large number of Afghan families after 2021, and the Richmond area is one of the places they settled. Dari is the Afghan variety of Persian and travels under that name in most language lists, so that is the option to reach for when a record is in Dari. Dari and Pashto are both written in the Perso-Arabic script, right to left, with letters that join to their neighbours and change shape depending on where they sit in a word. Pashto adds several letters Arabic does not have, marked with a small circle underneath, and a tool that treats the text as ordinary Arabic will mangle exactly those. Short vowels are generally not written at all, which is the real reason Afghan names reach English in so many different spellings: the reader is supplying the vowels.
Afghan documents also bring a calendar problem that has to be handled deliberately. Official records use the Solar Hijri calendar, whose years are counted from the same starting point as the Islamic lunar calendar but whose months follow the sun, so a year printed as 1380 is neither a Gregorian year nor a lunar Hijri one and converts to a different figure from either. On top of that, the traditional Afghan identity document often recorded a person's apparent age at the moment it was issued rather than a date of birth, which is why so many files show a year alone. That is a property of the original record, not an omission in the translation, and it is worth saying so plainly when you file.
A capital city on the fall line
Richmond stands where the James River drops off the piedmont onto the coastal plain, and the rapids that mark that fall line run right through the middle of town, which makes it one of very few American cities where you can run whitewater within sight of office buildings. The rapids are also why the city is here at all: boats coming up from the Chesapeake could go no further, so goods had to be unloaded, and a trading settlement grew at the break.
It has been the capital of Virginia since the Revolutionary period, and the State Capitol was designed by Thomas Jefferson on the model of a Roman temple he had studied in the south of France, the first building of its kind in the country. The speech in which Patrick Henry demanded liberty or death was given in a church on Church Hill in 1775. The city was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War and much of it burned in 1865, so the fabric downtown is a mixture of what survived and what replaced it. Later history runs through the same streets: Jackson Ward was one of the most important centres of Black business in the United States, and Maggie L. Walker, who founded a bank there, was the first Black woman in the country to charter one.
Today the economy is built on state government, law, finance, insurance, healthcare and a growing pharmaceutical and advanced manufacturing presence, with distribution centres strung along the interstate corridor. Several universities sit inside the city, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Science Museum of Virginia anchor the cultural district, Belle Isle in the middle of the river is the city's favourite walk, and an autumn folk festival on the riverbank draws performers from all over the world.
What Richmond households and employers send through
Immigration and resettlement files
Identity documents, family records, employment letters and supporting evidence for adjustment of status and related petitions. Volume in this category has been heavy in Virginia since 2021, and federal filings carry their own certification requirement that sits on top of the translation.
Circuit court and city records
Richmond is an independent city rather than part of a county, a Virginia arrangement that exists in few other states, so its circuit court and its clerk stand apart from those of neighbouring Henrico and Chesterfield counties. Which office issued a record is therefore part of what the record says.
Credentials and licensure
As a state capital, Richmond is where professional boards sit, so foreign degrees, training certificates and licence histories get translated for evaluation. Course lists and contact hours are the substance of those documents, and they live entirely inside tables.
Need a USCIS-certified translation?
If you are filing your identity document or other records with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS requires a complete, certified English translation of every foreign-language document, with a signed certification of accuracy. Our USCIS Translation Services provide certified, notarized translations accepted for green cards, visas, and citizenship applications.

Capture every page, including the reverse
Legalisation stamps, apostilles and registry endorsements are often on the back or in the margin. Upload them with the front page so that the whole record travels as one file.
Choose Persian for Dari, Pashto for Pashto
Dari appears as Persian in the language list, while Pashto is listed separately. The two share an alphabet but not a letter inventory, so picking the right one matters, and the same applies in reverse when a Virginia document has to be readable by a family member abroad.
Translate with the seals in place
Stamp text, book and folio references and tabular course listings are reconstructed rather than dropped, because those are the fields a reviewer uses to decide whether a document is what it claims to be.
Convert and confirm the dates yourself
Any Solar Hijri year should be checked against a conversion you trust before the file is submitted, and where the original gives only a year, leave it as a year rather than inventing a day and a month.

Richmond questions
Is there somewhere in Richmond I can visit in person?
No, there is no office. The service is entirely online, from upload to download. This page exists because of the languages documents arrive in around the Richmond area, not because there is a location in the city.
What is the difference between Dari and Pashto for translation purposes?
They are separate languages that share the Perso-Arabic alphabet, and Pashto uses several letters that Dari does not. Dari is a variety of Persian and is selected under that name, whereas Pashto has its own entry. Choose according to what the document is actually written in rather than what the household speaks, because a Pashto record put through as Persian will lose precisely the characters that distinguish it.
My tazkira shows only a year of birth. Will the translation add a full date?
It should not, and you should not either. The traditional Afghan identity document frequently recorded an apparent age rather than a date, so a year alone is a faithful reflection of the original. Explain that to the office receiving the file instead of filling the gap in.
Do the Spanish registry stamps get translated as well as the entry?
They need to be, because the issuing registry, the book and folio numbers and the official title are part of the evidence a reviewer looks at. Check that those elements are present and legible in the file you download before you use it.
Can I use this output as a certified translation?
Not on its own. A certified translation carries a signed statement of accuracy from a person, which is what USCIS and many courts require, and that is the separate service linked above. This tool produces the translated text.
