One language with two names, spread across four countries

In Malawi this language is called Chichewa and is the national language, spoken as a first or second language by most of the population. In Zambia the same language is known as Chinyanja or simply Nyanja, and it is the main language of Lusaka and the Eastern Province and one of the regional languages used in schools and broadcasting. It is also spoken in the Tete province of Mozambique and in parts of eastern Zimbabwe. Counting first and second language speakers together, the total runs well into the tens of millions. The prefix chi is the noun class marker used for languages, which is why you see the name with and without it depending on who wrote the document.

The two names are not two languages, but they are not identical registers either. Written Malawian usage follows the standard orthography settled in Malawi and is the form used in schoolbooks, church publications and government information campaigns. Urban Zambian Nyanja, as spoken in Lusaka, carries far more English borrowing and some influence from neighbouring languages, and reads as informal to a Malawian audience. If your document is going to one country in particular, say so, because the choice affects vocabulary far more than it affects grammar.

English is the official language of Malawi, so birth certificates, court records, school certificates and other formal paperwork are issued in English rather than in Chewa. That shapes the translation work in this pair. Almost everything moving into Chewa is material meant to be read and understood by ordinary people: health information, farming advice, legal rights explainers, teaching material and religious texts. Almost everything moving out of Chewa is spoken material that has been written down, such as interview transcripts, community meeting notes and field research.

Why a Chewa page needs more room than the English it came from

Chewa builds a verb by stacking pieces onto a root. A subject marker comes first, then a tense marker, then an object marker if there is one, then the root, then any extensions that change the meaning of the action, then a final vowel. Ndikupita is one word that carries what English needs three for: I am going. Adzandithandiza packs a subject, a future tense, an object and a verb root into a single unbroken string. English sentences with several short function words come out as fewer but much longer Chewa words.

That is a typesetting problem as much as a linguistic one. A word of eighteen or twenty letters will not fit a narrow table column or a form field sized for English, and there is no widely available hyphenation dictionary for Chewa in PDF layout engines, so the word cannot be split at a sensible point. It jumps whole to the next line and leaves a visible hole in a justified column. Expect a translated document to run roughly a fifth longer than the English original, and expect the pressure to show up first in tables, captions and callout boxes rather than in body text.

The other structural feature is noun class agreement. Every noun belongs to a class, and the class is echoed as a prefix on the adjectives, verbs, possessives and demonstratives that refer to it. Change a noun during editing and every agreeing word in the sentence has to change with it. This is where word-by-word substitution falls apart: the individual words can all be correct while the sentence is still ungrammatical, because the prefixes no longer match the noun they belong to.

Three spelling details worth knowing before you upload

The mark inside ng

An apostrophe after ng marks a single sound, the one at the end of the English word sing, as opposed to the two sounds in ng. It appears in ordinary words such as ngombe with the mark, meaning cow. Word processors that turn straight marks into curly quotes, or copy operations that drop the mark entirely, change the word. The mark is preserved as written.

Tone that the page does not carry

Chewa distinguishes words by pitch, but standard writing does not mark tone. Written pairs that look identical are told apart by pitch in speech and by context on the page. A translation engine therefore has to read the surrounding sentence rather than the word alone. Academic and teaching texts sometimes add accents over vowels, and those are kept if your source has them.

Borrowed words get reshaped

Syllables in Chewa end in a vowel, so English loanwords are rebuilt to fit: sukulu for school, buku for book, galimoto for a motor vehicle. A translation that leaves technical English terms in their original shape looks unfinished, while one that reshapes established borrowings the way the language actually does reads as normal to a Malawian or Zambian reader.

The documents that actually move in this pair

Because formal records in Malawi are issued in English, the demand is concentrated in material written to be understood rather than filed. Health programmes, donors and government departments all produce documents in English that then have to reach people in villages and townships. Recurring jobs include:

  • Public health material for HIV, tuberculosis, malaria and maternal health programmes, including consent forms, treatment instructions and clinic signage
  • Farming guidance on seed, fertiliser, irrigation and crop pricing distributed through extension officers

Standard written Chewa does not mark tone, and the output follows that convention, because a document full of accent marks would look wrong to any ordinary reader. Words that are distinguished only by pitch in speech are distinguished by context on the page, which is why the engine reads whole sentences rather than substituting word for word. If your source text uses tone marks for teaching or linguistic purposes, they are carried through rather than stripped.

Are Malawian certificates issued in Chewa?

Generally no. English is the official language of Malawi, so birth and marriage certificates, court judgments, land documents and Malawi School Certificate of Education results are issued in English. If an institution abroad has asked you for a translation of a Malawian certificate, it usually already is in English. Requests for Chewa translation are almost always about material that needs to reach a Chewa-speaking audience.

By how much will my document grow?

Plan for roughly a fifth more text than the English source, though the figure varies with subject matter. Instructional and legal content expands more than narrative, because the descriptive phrasing needed for terms with no direct Chewa equivalent is longer than the English term it replaces. Leave slack in fixed-height boxes, and avoid text that has been fitted exactly to a graphic.

Can I translate from Chewa into English?

Yes, and it is a common direction for research and programme work. Interview transcripts, focus group notes, community meeting minutes and field reports are recorded in Chewa and read in English by funders and partners. Expect the English version to be shorter than the source. Where the original contains proverbs or idiom, have a speaker check the passage, since fixed expressions are the part most likely to be flattened into something literal.

Will the noun class prefixes agree properly?

That is the main quality test for this language. Every noun belongs to a class, and the adjectives, verbs, possessives and demonstratives referring to it must carry the matching prefix. Models trained on Chewa text handle standard document vocabulary well, but rare technical nouns are where agreement is most likely to slip. Run a short sample through the trial and have a speaker read it before committing a long programme document.
