Sending French to a Haitian audience is the classic mistake
Around twelve million people in Haiti speak Haitian Creole, and it is the only language most of them speak. French has long been the language of courts, contracts and elite schooling, and it is understood well by a minority. The 1987 constitution made Creole an official language alongside French, and an academy for the language, the Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen, was established in 2014. Outside Haiti the largest communities are in South Florida, New York and Massachusetts, with substantial numbers in the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Canada, Chile and France.
The practical consequence turns up constantly in American public services. A hospital, a school district or a housing agency needs to reach Haitian families, someone looks up the country, sees French listed, and sends out French letters. The material is legally translated and functionally useless. Creole took most of its vocabulary from French but is a separate language with its own grammar, its own spelling system and its own written norms. Choosing Creole rather than French is the single most consequential decision in this language pair, and it is made before any translation happens.
Working in the other direction, from Haitian documents into English, the situation reverses. Civil records in Haiti, meaning birth extracts from the national archives, marriage records, court judgments, notarial deeds and school diplomas, are drawn up in French, not Creole. If you are holding a Haitian birth certificate, the translation you need is almost certainly out of French. Creole source documents tend to be different in kind: witness statements, letters, community publications, radio scripts and material produced by organisations that deliberately write in the language people actually use.
A spelling system younger than many of its readers
The written standard is recent and deliberately designed. A working group at the national pedagogical institute settled the system in 1978, the state recognised it in 1979 alongside the education reform that put Creole into primary classrooms, and the Ministry of Education made it official in 1980. It is phonemic: one sound, one spelling, with no silent letters and none of the French conventions that make a word look nothing like it sounds. Fixed digraphs carry the nasal vowels, so an, en and on are single sounds rather than letter sequences, and doubled forms such as ann and enn spell the nasal vowel followed by a consonant.
Accents do real work in this system and are not decorative. The grave accent on è and ò marks open vowels that contrast with the closed ones written e and o, so losing an accent in a font substitution or a copy and paste changes a word rather than merely misspelling it. Because the script is otherwise plain Latin, a Creole PDF has none of the rendering risks that come with a non-Latin script. The failures in this pair are linguistic, and they are much harder to notice from the outside.
Older Haitian texts, and a fair amount of informal writing today, use French-influenced spellings that predate the 1980 standard. Both are readable to a Creole speaker, but only one of them belongs in a document issued by an institution. Translation output follows the official orthography, which is what schools teach, what government publications use and what any Creole speaker educated since the reform will expect to see.
Four places where French-trained output gives itself away
Articles fused into the noun
Many Creole nouns swallowed the French article that once stood in front of them. The word for moon carries the old feminine article inside it, and the word for bird carries the old plural one. A system that treats these as French words plus an article will try to strip a prefix that is now part of the word, producing something that does not exist.
Tense sits in front of the verb
Verbs do not change shape for person or tense. A small set of particles placed before the verb marks past, progressive and future instead. Output that inflects verbs the way French does is a clear sign the engine has fallen back on the wrong language, and it reads as broken to a Creole speaker even when every word is recognisable.
The definite article comes last
Creole puts the definite article after the noun, and its form changes with the sounds that precede it. The plural marker also follows the noun. Word order in the noun phrase is therefore genuinely different from French, not a variation on it, and it is one of the first things a reader notices when a translation has been generated from French.
Write for the reader you have
Much of the material translated into Creole is public information for people who may have had limited schooling in any language. Long sentences carried over from an English legal notice survive the translation and defeat the purpose. Shortening sentences in the source before you translate does more for comprehension than anything done afterwards.
Where the demand for Creole translation comes from
Most of the volume in this pair moves from English into Creole, and most of it is produced by institutions in the United States that have a legal duty to communicate with people in a language they understand. Florida, New York and Massachusetts account for the bulk of it. The rest comes from humanitarian and development work inside Haiti. Typical documents include:
- Hospital and clinic material: consent forms, discharge instructions, medication guidance, appointment letters and insurance notices
- School district communication, including enrolment packets, special education notices, report card explanations and parent handbooks
- Immigration and legal aid material covering temporary protected status, asylum procedure and tenants rights, written for people navigating the system without a lawyer
- Emergency and disaster information, from hurricane preparedness to shelter instructions and relief eligibility

Vragen over Haïtiaans Creools vertalingen
We produceren elk jaar dezelfde mededelingen. Is bulkvertaling praktisch?
Dat is een goede toepassing voor dit paar. Taaltoegangsprogramma's heruitgeven doorgaans een stabiele set documenten per cyclus, en het volume in plaats van de moeilijkheid is wat ze duur maakt om met de hand te verwerken. Het automatisch doorlopen van de set en het laten beoordelen van de uitvoer door een Creoolssprekende recensent is veel sneller dan opnieuw te beginnen, en de beoordeling vangt het kleine aantal passages op waar een juridische term een menselijke beslissing vereist.
